NGL I think it’s hilarious how angry Europeans (and specifically Italians) get when Italian Americans call themselves Italian. A guy can be 100% ethnically Italian, have an Italian name, speak the language, uphold Italian cultural practices and they’ll argue with him if he calls himself Italian. And it’s kind of the opposite of how Irish people treat Irish Americans. They’re like “JFK was one of us. Obama? Also one of us.”
telling a guy he just isn’t Italian enough despite the fact he firmly identifies as Italian, has grown up in an Italian majorly area, has 4 Italian immigrant grandparents and is named something like Gianfranco Giordani vs. being like “This guy’s great grandfather was from Galway so we’re claiming this as another common Irish W.”

btw the katy perry/bezos’ girlfriend/other four irrelevant billionaires 10 minute space stunt was not the first all female expedition no matter how much they try to market it as such. the first all female mission was in 1963 with soviet cosmonauts Valentina Tereshkova, Irina Solovyova and Valentina Ponomaryova - all three of which were working class and had to pass incredibly hard exams to be chosen from 400 potential candidates. just in case we started falling for the propaganda machine again

if you feel like you’re always getting talked over, or if you feel like you’re always accidentally interrupting people, you should consider looking into some of the linguistics research about conversation style and turn-taking. lingthusiasm podcast has a great episode called “how to rebalance a lopsided conversation” that goes over some of this research in a really accessible way; Deborah Tannen’s book You just don’t understand is an early book¹ that’s aimed at general audiences on the same topic.
the thing is, when there’s conflict in how a conversation flows, often what’s going on is a mismatch in norms or expectations – not that one person is necessarily acting “wrong” and the other person is “right.” the mismatches in norms/expectations can and do align with existing power structures in society, but being more aware of them can really help you as an individual trying to navigate them.
you can train your brain for more linguistic awareness! start listening for pauses, intakes of breath, or back-channeling that’s meant to support, not interrupt. try it out!
¹ I am linking to the wikipedia page for the book rather than a link to buy the book because it’s kind of outdated and the criticism section on the wiki page is pretty reasonable. If you do read this book, be prepared for uhhhh period-typical gender essentialism that, to my knowledge, Tannen has not particularly updated her views on in the intervening time. But it is an influential and important book, just read it skeptically imo

Honestly, I think a big part of the myth of the “universal” tabletop RPG just boils down to people who do character creation but never actually play, and thus genuinely don’t realise that “this system can construct a game-mechanical model of the character I have in mind” and “this system is amenable to actually playing them the way I imagine them” are two very different propositions.

Finally oh my god…. That was ridiculous….
For all the people in the notes like “that wasn’t already a rule?!” Nope! It seems pretty obvious, but yeah there was nothing stopping anyone from just watching nothing and voting based on vibes.
This has literally ALWAYS been the case for animation. Year after year they’d release comments to the effect of “yeah animation is for kids so i just picked the Disney one/the one my kid liked.” Leading to animated films that were uncontested masterworks of the craft losing to Big Hero Six.
But the last decade it’s become increasingly obvious how little the academy voters actually give a shit about film, despite ostensibly being industry professionals, regularly snubbing foreign films or minority led films in a super transparent manner. The “campaigning” (read: bribery) that high budget films do and the prevalence of “oscar bait” continue to demonstrate the immense gap between academy voters and even mainstream audiences, let alone people who actually give a shit about film as a medium.
In 2012 the academy membership was 94% white, 77% male, 86% age 50 or older, and had a median age of 62.
Despite very public efforts to “diversify” membership— about half the board of governors was female in 2020– they’ve yet to demonstrate anything but the most grudging, minimal commitment to change.
Leading everyone to conclude “ah, so this was all a joke to you then. So all the pomp and circumstance was a circus routine. Fuck this then.” and they stopped watching. Important non us filmmakers stopped even submitting because why bother? The oscar’s viewing numbers have been plummeting for a while but they were still trying to blame it on the death of cable.
Apparently they’re now desperate enough to do the bare fucking minimum of watching the films they’ve been pretending to have the authority to judge.
